CASE OF THE MONTH

Strumal Carcinoid

The patient is a 25-year old woman who is seen by her gynecologist for pelvic pain. Physical examination reveals a left adnexal mass, which is subsequently resected. The mass measures 6.0 cm and grossly appears to be cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst). Of the numerous sections submitted for histologic examination only mature elements are present. One of the elements is thyroid tissue (1.2 cm), within which is a 0.6 cm strumal carcinoid tumor. Immunoperoxidase stains show that the carcinoid tumor is positive for thyroglobulin, chromogranin, synaptophysin, and CD56.
