CASE OF THE MONTH

Limbal Dermoid

The patient is a young man with Goldenhar syndrome who presented with a lesion on the limbal part of the eye with associated high induced astigmatism and irritative symptoms This lesion has been present since birth and has been stable in size. The lesion was removed and sent for pathologic evaluation.

On histology, the lesion consisted of benign squamous mucosa with thick subepithelial collagen, adnexal structures, and hair follicles. These features were reminiscent of dermal and epidermal tissue and are consistent with those found in a limbal dermoid. Limbal dermoid are benign lesions. Goldenhar syndrome is a rare congenital defect which is associated with limbal dermoids in addition to other conditions.
