CASE OF THE MONTH

Goblet Cell Carcinoid

The patient is a 54-year-old gentleman who undergoes appendectomy for possible ruptured viscus. Sections of the appendix demonstrate concentric mural deposits of tumor cells arranged as tight clusters. Signet ring cells are also present. Immunoperoxidase stains show that the tumor cells are positive for pCEA, panCK, and synaptophysin. Mucicarmine stain is also positive. The diagnosis is typical goblet cell carcinoid with features worrisome for adenocarcinoma ex goblet cell carcinoid.
