CASE OF THE MONTH

Pindborg Tumor

The patient is a 49-year-old woman who presents with a maxillary cyst near the incisive foramen. Radiographically, the lesion resembles a dentigerous cyst with small radiopacities within the large radiolucent area. The excised specimen consists of two pieces of soft tissue which, when sectioned, have a gritty consistency. The histology is characterized by sheets of polyhedral, eosinophilic squamous cells with psammomatous calcifications. Rare mulitnucleated cells are present. The diagnosis is calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (Pindborg tumor).
