PETROGLYPH FNA CLINIC

FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION

DURING THE TEST

When you arrive at the Clinic you will be asked to complete a Health Information Sheet and sign the Consent Form.

fna clinic patient chairPrior to the procedure, the pathologist will obtain a history and perform a focused physical examination. Biopsies are either performed by palpation (feel) or ultrasound guidance.

Prior to the biopsy, the skin is cleaned with alcohol.  Then a very small needle, much smaller than what is used for a blood draw is put into the nodule and a gentle jiggling motion is made that lasts for a few seconds.  The needle is removed and slides are prepared from the specimen, which typically consists of less than a drop of blood. This process may be repeated a second or third time depending on the composition of the nodule.

Ultimately the aim is to provide a thorough answer. At some point in the process there is a brief intermission so that some of the slides can be stained to ensure that adequate specimen has been obtained and to render a preliminary diagnosis.
